One-year fellowship at Yenching Academy of Peking University

Master of China Studies programme (in English) at Peking University, Beijing, China. Designed to prepare an elite class of future leaders to meet the challenges of the 21st century global landscape.


The Yenching Academy offers international students a one-year fellowship to pursue a Master of Arts in China Studies degree program. The programme is open for students from all programmes and faculties: prior knowlegde of the Chinese language is not required. Courses will be taught in English, but Chinese language study will be required for all international students; those with an advanced level of Chinese will be encouraged to take courses taught in Chinese.

Residential College

The Yenching Academy classrooms and offices are located in the Jing Yuan Courtyard in the heart of the Peking University campus. Yenching Scholars and visiting faculty will reside nearby in dormitory facilities that will feature common lounges, a library, and cafeteria.


Yenching Scholars receive a full tuition scholarship, accommodation in the residential college, a stipend to cover living expenses, and round trip airfare from their home country.

Admission requirements

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree

  • Be preferably 25 years of age or younger in 2018

  • Outstanding academic record

  • Demonstrated leadership skills

  • Active in extracurricular activities

  • Active community engagement and a strong sense of social responsibility

  • Strong moral character

  • Demonstrated interest in exploring diverse cultures, in particular about China and the Asia Pacific region

  • Demonstrated English proficiency (IETLS 7.0 or TOEFL 100)

  1. Fill out the application form from and complete it.

  2. Ask two recommenders to complete the Recommender form and ask them to send it directly to: (and mention Yenching Academy and your name).

  3. Write a personal statement. The statement should include a personal introduction and reasons why you wish to be a Yenching Scholar. Written in English, it should not exceed 750 words. Use your full name + Personal Statement as a document name.
