Ombuds officer for students
The Ombuds officer is a confidential and independent officer of the Leiden University who deals with complaints from students, both Dutch and international. The Ombuds officer is available three days a week in Plexus to receive complaints and to process them. Students may contact the Ombuds officer by email, by telephone or by making an appointment through the secretary (see contact information below). Preferably complaints should be submitted in writing .
Most complaints relate to the service provided by staff of faculties or central services. Generally this concerns a matter of inadequate information, communication or unsatisfactory treatment in the relation between students and employees of the Leiden University (i.e. professor, lecturer, counselor, advisor, coordinator or a division, administration, office in its entirety)
In many cases the role of the Ombuds officer is merely advisory seeking to help a student in resolving a particular problem. Furthermore the Ombuds officer may also deal with complaints through problem investigation, mediation or even an official report to the Executive Board of the Leiden University. In most cases the Ombuds officer – if a complaint appears (partly) grounded - will emphasize the importance of amical settlement, problem awareness and urgency to improve procedures if needed to avoid new complaints in almost similar cases.
