Required documents for master’s applications

This information does not apply to applicants who have a Leiden bachelor’s degree which grants direct admission to a Leiden master’s degree in the same field. Such students should apply directly via Studielink. Please note these procedures may be amended in the near future due to new legislation.
 
Please upload the following documents in the online application system:

Copy of valid passport or European ID card

If you live in the Netherlands, you must also include a copy of your residence permit (both sides) if applicable.
 

Motivation letter

The motivation letter is a personal statement in which you explain why you wish to study at Leiden University and follow your particular programme of choice. It is also an opportunity for you to convince the faculty of your qualities. The letter should contain about 700-1500 words.

Copies of diplomas and transcripts

You are required to upload copies of all diplomas and official transcripts in the original language (with official translations if these documents are not in English, Dutch, German or French). If you have not yet obtained your bachelor’s degree, please mention your (expected) graduation date and include copies of all transcripts obtained to date.

Please note that if you are applying for an advanced LLM programme you are required to upload translations in English if the original documents are not in English or Dutch.

You are also welcome to add other documents in support of your academic performance (e.g. thesis abstract, publications).

If you are admitted to Leiden University certified copies of your diplomas and transcripts will be required. These must be sent directly to the Admissions Office by the issuing institution in a sealed envelope. Your admission statement will specify exactly which documents are needed, as well as the certification requirements and the deadlines for submission. 

Copy of TOEFL, IELTS or CPE certificate

If applicable, please include a copy of your English proficiency certificate
 

Up to date CV

Please include the latest version of your CV (resume).
 

Letters of recommendation

Please include two letters of recommendation (at least one from an academic staff member).
Your referee needs to write a letter in which he/she describes your skills and qualities in order to convince the department to admit you. The recommendation letter should be written on letterhead paper and should be signed by the person writing it. The name, position and contact (email) address and telephone number of the referee should be clearly visible, for reference verification purposes. No template is available for letters of recommendation.

Reference letters should be scanned and uploaded in your online application.

However if your referee prefers that your reference letter remains confidential, he/she may fill in the contact form of the Student Affairs Front Office or send it by post to:

In this case your referee should clearly state your full name and, if possible, your online application student number in the reference letter.

Finally, please include any additional documents that may be required to process your application. Be sure to check the admission requirements for the programme of your choice.
