Paying your tuition fees

Steps to take to arrange payment

  1. Register with Studielink
    All future Bachelor students must submit a request for student registration via Studielink. More information can be found on our Bachelor students registration page.

  2. Enter your payment details into Studielink
    After submitting your request for student registration, you should also enter your payment details into Studielink. To do so please do the following:
    - Log into Studielink and go to ‘My to do list’
    - Enter your payment details according to the instructions provided in Studielink

  3. Receive an email with tuition fee payment information
    Within a few weeks of submitting your payment details via Studielink, Leiden University will calculate the exact amount of tuition fee you are required to pay. You will then receive an email with details of the amount due as well as payment instructions and deadlines. It is very important that you monitor your emails carefully and look out for this mail.

  4. Take care of payment
    Please take care of payment according to the instructions and deadlines stated in the above-mentioned email.

Methods of payment

Depending on the amount of tuition fee due and the payment details you entered into Studielink, you will be offered one of the following options:

  • Payment by way of digital direct debit authorisation
    This option is only available to students who are nationals of an EU/EEA country and who have a bank account from a country that is a member of the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA)*. If you are an EU/EEA national and you provide a bank account number from a SEPA member country in Studielink, you will be sent an email with your direct debit details and instructions on how to authorise payment digitally. You can choose to pay in one lump sum or in instalments.

    Will someone else pay the tuition fee for you?
    You can allow someone else, for example a parent, to digitally authorise the direct debit for you. However in order to do so this person must have both a bank account from a SEPA member country and a DigiD account.

    * SEPA member countries include all EEA member states plus Monaco and Switzerland.

  • Payment according to instructions sent to you by email
    If you are not an EU/EEA national and/or you do not have a bank account from a SEPA member country you will instead be sent an email containing detailed instructions on how to take care of your payment and the deadlines for doing so. The payment methods available to you will be determined by the amount of tuition fee due and the payment details you entered into Studielink. Payment can be made in one lump sum or in instalments, depending on the selected payment method.

Bank and credit card charges

If you choose to pay by bank transfer, please be aware that banks generally charge an additional fee for international transfers. As you will need to cover the costs of these charges, please check with your bank about these costs before transferring money to Leiden University. It is important that we receive the correct amount after any charges have been deducted by your bank.

If you choose to pay by credit card please note that there is a 5% administration charge. Payment by credit card is only available to certain groups of students.
